Shape

Definition: An area that stands out because of a defined or implied boundary or because of differences of value, color, or texture. (Art Fundamentals. Ocvirk, et al, 2006)

Biomorphic Shape: An irregular shape that resembles the freely developed curves found in living organisms.

Curvilinear Shape: A shape whose boundaries consist of curved lines.

Geometric Shape: A shape that appears related to geometry; usually simple, such as a triangle, rectangle, circle, square, etc. Can be created using a ruler, compass, and protractor.

Implied Shape: A shape that does not physically exist but is suggested by dots, lines, areas, or their edges.

Perspective: Any graphic system used to create the illusion of three-dimensional images and/or spatial relationships on a two-dimensional surface. Atmospheric Perspective uses lightening values, softening details and textures, reduced value contrasts, neutralized colors, position on page and overlapping. Linear Perspective employs a horizon line, vanishing points, and precise drawing methods.

Rectilinear Shape: A shape whose boundaries consist of straight lines.

Do you tend toward all curvilinear or rectilinear shapes? How about spicing it up in your next quilt by using a variety of shapes?
