Bridges Exhibit – Denver National 2007
Bridges pieces are due at the AQuA meeting on March 17th. The “Call for Entries” as well as the Entry Form is contained in this newsletter. Please keep in mind the following:
Susan Strickland is out of town, so if you have questions about the show or your piece, please contact Rita Faussone at 245-6590, rff@bresnan.net.
=======================================================================================================
Members to Vote on Bridges Postcard: At the March meeting, the Steering Committee will ask the members present to vote for the most graphic and dynamic Bridges piece for our postcard for the Denver National exhibit. The majority vote will determine the piece selected. The vote will be a secret ballot with the results not released until after Faye Anderson juries our pieces in early April. We will ask you to vote for the quilt that you believe to be the (1) the most visually appealing for a postcard; (2) exemplifies well crafted work; and (3) is an excellent interpretation of the “Bridges” theme.
=======================================================================================================
Stash Opportunity: In November 2006 Maureen Rogers, a well-known art quilter from the Glenwood Springs area, passed away as a result of a tragic automobile accident. In an effort to help her family, the quilt guild in that area has arranged an estate sale of her fabric, books and four Singer Featherweight machines. All proceeds will go towards the settlement of her affairs. I have been told that she left approximately 2,000 yards of fabric, which will all be priced at $4 per yard. No cutting of fabric will be done. If the piece is 5 yards, you must purchase all 5 yards at the $4/yard price. No credit cards will be accepted, only cash and checks. The sale will be held Saturday, March 31st at the Glenwood Springs Community Center, 100 Wulfsohn Road (take West Glenwood exit – go to the right past the new Mall and the Center is on the right) from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. If you have any questions, please contact Jan Horn at janhorn@sopris.net or 970-963-4148.

THANK YOU – THANK YOU – THANK YOU to the many members who stepped up at the last meeting to the challenge of helping our wonderful group grow and prosper. Thank you to Cathy Stewart who volunteered to Chair a Sherrill Kahn workshop in July. Cathy is busy working on it and hopes the date will be July 7-8. I think you’re gonna love Sherill’s work – check out her website at www.impressmenow.com. Thank you to Jolene Stratton who will be transporting our Bridges pieces to Denver for jurying by Faye Anderson. Also, Jolene
volunteered to work with Faye, who is the program chair for the Front Range Contemporary Quilt Guild, on a possible workshop sharing venture featuring Cas Holmes – check out her website at www.casholmestextilearts.net. Sandra Hoefner is working on a workshop with Carol Shinn, master machine embroiderer. Her website is www.carolshinn.com. Sandra hopes to be able to bring Carol to our side of the mountains in the fall of this year. And, thank you to the many members who signed up to do a demo at coming meetings. I will be contacting each of you to get those scheduled.

I goofed!! (Rita that is) Not hard to imagine is it? I ordered the glassine envelopes for our postcard show and ordered a slightly smaller size than I should have and they won’t take ‘em back!! I ordered envelopes that are 4 - 1/4 x 6 – 1/8, which doesn’t give much room for an embellished postcard. (And we have 500 of them). So, we need to make our postcards just slightly smaller, i.e., 3-3/4” x 5-3/4.” I hope this doesn’t inconvenience anyone. If you are already making postcards, you are definitely an overachiever! Perhaps you could cut them down to the right size?? Everyone will get an envelope at the March meeting to make sure that your postcards will fit correctly. +++++++++++++++++++
Postcard Show – The Creamery Arts Center in Hotchkiss, starting November 9th: In April Cathy Stewart will give us a mini-workshop/demo on her technique for creating postcards for our show in Hotchkiss. This is a non-juried show and these are the general guidelines:
=======================================================================================================
Demos: Thank you to Kathy Schattleitner and Bonny Stonemark for their Ricky Timms “Scribble Appliqué” demo at our February meeting. In March, Christie Barton will demo fabric beads and Emily Buchanan will show us foil beads. Sounds like fun!
=======================================================================================================
Please bring your show and tell, techniques you have tried, books that you have run onto, classes or events you have heard about. All of this information keeps the creative flow going. Do your part!
=======================================================================================================
Design Boot Camp: Drill Sergeant Deborah Snider presented “Texture and Pattern” at February’s meeting (the handout is included in this newsletter) and in March she will share “Balance.” Thank you, Deborah. You are doing a great job and we appreciate how hard you have worked to bring us this valuable information.

WEB SITE: www.theartquiltassociation.com now has two more gallery pages—Carole O’Brien and Cathy Stewart. How terrific!! There are still those of you who have promised Marge Fox their web page info. Please work on it. Look at your fellow member’s pages and figure out what you want to show and say. Marge can list prices if things are for sale. Your inclusion of a picture or artist statement is completely voluntary. Pictures need to be high quality. Marge can also to link to other places where your work appears. E-mail your pictures and other info to her at foxhaven@bresnan.net. Please don’t make your page and send it to her---just send it in pieces attached to an e-mail; then send a check to Susan Strickland for $20. Contact Marge at 241-5523 if you have more questions.

This was sent to me by Susan Strickland. It’s another one of those zillions of things that circle the world in a heartbeat via the internet. I really loved it thought and thought you would enjoy it also; there’s lots of wisdom in these few words.
Life isn't fair, but it's still good.
When in doubt, just take the next small step.
Life is too short to waste time hating anyone.
Don't take yourself so seriously. No one else does.
Pay off your credit cards every month.
You don't have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.
Cry with someone. It's more healing than crying alone.
It's OK to get angry with God. He can take it.
Save for retirement starting with your first paycheck.
When it comes to chocolate, resistance is futile.
Make peace with your past so it won't screw up the present.
It's OK to let your children see you cry.
Don't compare your life to others'. You have no idea what their journey is all about.
If a relationship has to be a secret, you shouldn't be in it.
Everything can change in the blink of an eye. But don't worry; God never blinks.
Life is too short for long pity parties. Get busy living, or get busy dying.
You can get through anything if you stay put in today.
A writer writes. If you want to be a writer, write.
It's never too late to have a happy childhood. But the second one is up to you and no one else.
When it comes to going after what you love in life, don't take no for an answer.
Burn the candles, use the nice sheets, wear the fancy lingerie.
Don't save it for a special occasion. Today is special.
Over prepare, then go with the flow.
Be eccentric now. Don't wait for old age to wear purple.
No one is in charge of your happiness except you.
Frame every so-called disaster with these words: "In five years, will this matter?"
Always choose life.
Forgive everyone everything.
What other people think of you is none of your business.
Time heals almost everything. Give time time.
However good or bad a situation is, it will change.
Your job won't take care of you when you are sick. Your friends will. Stay in touch.
Believe in miracles.
God loves you because of who God is, not because of anything you did or didn't do.
Whatever doesn't kill you really does make you stronger.
Growing old beats the alternative -- dying young.
Your children get only one childhood. Make it memorable.
Read the Psalms. They cover every human emotion.
Get outside every day. Miracles are waiting everywhere.
If we all threw our problems in a pile and saw everyone else's, we'd grab ours back.
Don't audit life. Show up and make the most of it now.
Get rid of anything that isn't useful, beautiful or joyful.
All that truly matters in the end is that you loved.
Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need.
The best is yet to come.
No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up.
Take a deep breath. It calms the mind.
If you don't ask, you don't get.
Yield.
Life isn't tied with a bow, but it's still a gift.

Kudos to our members and to AQuA:
Janome Xpression Felting Machine is now available at Quilter’s Corner. This machine is a dedicated felting machine with a five-needle preset head, free arm with base storage box, see-through adjustable presser foot and see-through finger guard for safety. Bill Keith tells me that it will turn ordinary fabric scraps into new colors and combinations, works with yarns, roving, ribbon, lace and other textiles. I think it sounds like a very fun machine to have. $299 and comes with an instructional video. Go down there and have the nice folks who work there give you a demo.

Glenwood Sewing Center, Glenwood Springs:
Sandy Boyd wanted me to let you know that Ruth’s new book “Ruth B. McDowell's Piecing Workshop: Step-by-Step Visual Guide, Indispensable Reference for Quilters, Bonus Projects (Paperback)” is now available and that’s the book she will be using to teach this class. $60 – Saturday & Sunday April 14 & 15 – 10:30 – 5 p.m.

Were you a little late to last month’s meeting and then couldn’t find it? Our regular room was taken over by the Lions Club as one of their early blood draw locations for the annual health fair. We ended up meeting in a room on the second floor, which worked just fine. Beverly Cormier who does such a great job of getting a room for us at no cost, suggests that the next time we lose our regular room for one reason or another, we will meet in the room we used in February. So, in case this should happen again, here are the directions. Walk down towards the front of the building on the first floor and take the elevator to the second floor. When you get off the elevator, turn to your right and go into the room with the brightly colored mural on the wall. Thanks again, Bev!!

DO YOU HAVE A RECIPE YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE?
Send it to me and I’ll make it the “Recipe of the Month”
Denver National 2007
Exhibit Dates: May 3,4,5 and 6 2007
Deadline: March 17, 2007 NO EXCEPTIONS
THEME: “BRIDGES” A bridge can be concrete and steel stretching for miles or a simple wooden plank across a ditch. They can be manmade or carved by nature. But there are also invisible bridges, those involving connection or transition. Come join AQuA on a trip across many bridges.
All pieces must be the original work of AQuA members.
DESIGN RULES: Not smaller than 24” and not larger than 50” in any one direction. (This rule is on the advice of the Mancuso management regarding successful exhibits they have hung in the past.)
SHIPPING RESTRICTIONS: Mancuso allows no peanuts or bubble wrap. All shipped pieces must coexist in the same shipping container. For this exhibit that means NO frames, stretcher bars or other heavy supports. The piece needs to be able to be folded without being ruined. Surface design/embellishment needs to be securely fastened so that it doesn’t rub off. AQuA purchases the shipping container and the Steering Committee reserves the right to decide if your piece will or will not play nice in the box with other pieces.
SLEEVE REQUIREMENTS: A top and bottom 4” standard quilt sleeve is required on the back; however, experience from last year shows us that due to Mancuso hanging system a top 5” sleeve would be better.
LABEL: A cloth label must be sewn to the bottom left hand side of the quilt back. That label must include your name, address and telephone number. You could, of course, also include the Title of the piece.
ENTRY FEE: There will be an entry fee of $15.00 for the first piece and $10.00 for each additional entry. Entry forms will be distributed at a later date.
PHOTOGRAPHY: Professional photography will again be required and arranged at the best price we can find. Currently we believe that we have a photographer who will charge the following: $20.00 for the first quilt which will include a full shot, one close up and a CD; $15.00 for each additional quilt. You may also arrange for your own professional photographer.
DUE DATE: March 17, 2007 and absolutely no exceptions will be made.
JURYING: These pieces will be hand delivered to Faye Anderson on a Friday and then picked up on Sunday. The comments and critiques by the juror will not be forthcoming until the pieces NOT selected are notified by mail along with the return of their piece. The juror will be asked to select from three to five pieces which she feels would be eye catching for our postcard. The Steering Committee will make the final decision on which piece will be on the postcard.
Do not write in this box.

Signature
Texture and Pattern
Definition: The surface character of a material that can be experienced through touch or the illusion of touch, produced by natural forces or through an artist’s manipulation of the art elements.
Actual Texture: A surface that can be experienced through the sense of touch (as opposed to a surface visually simulated by the artist).
Assemblage: A technique that combines actual items in a display (usually three-dimensional).
Collage: A technique of picture making in which real materials possessing actual textures are attached on the picture plane surface, often in combination with painted or drawn passes.
Pattern: Any artistic design or repeated element that is usually varied and produces interconnections and directional movements.
Tactile: A quality that refers to the sense of touch.
Trompe L’oeil: Literally “deceives the eye”; a painting technique that copies nature with such exactitude as to be mistaken for the real thing.
In art quilts, it is possible to use line, shape, color and value (the other elements of art) to create patterns and simulated textures in the creation of a fabric collage or quilt. We can easily add three-dimensional components to our designs, giving them both simulated and actual textures. This is why so many viewers simply have to “touch” our quilts!
