The Art Quilt Association (AQuA)
Issue #18 – June 2007
www.theartquiltassociation.com
The goal of AQuA is to explore textile manipulation and
the diversity of mixed media as an art form
Next meeting – Saturday, June 16th 9:30 a.m., DHS Building
========================================================================================
At the May meeting, exhibitions were the main topic. Denver National II and III, planning for the Art Center exhibit in 2008, our invitation to Pacific International Quilt Festival in Santa Clara CA in 2009. Look for more to come on all these events. Expect to learn new sleeve requirements for the Mancuso Shows and a new Velcro hanging system which will be required for the Art Center show. All of this is meant in the spirit of improving the way our art looks and hangs.
Members Pages now exist at the website. If you were not at the meeting to learn the secret handshake (how to find them on the site) call a friend who came to the meeting or Marge Fox, or a steer. Lots of information about AQuA events and opportunities are now posted on the site. Marge Fox
Deb Snider finished Design Boot Camp and presented us with Completion Certificates. Many thanks to Deb for teaching us
so much and making it so much fun. Watch for her lesson handouts to appear on the Members Pages soon.
Pat Sprague presents AQuA Program for Friendship Quilters of Montrose CO May 24, 2007
Pat Sprague's presentation on art quilting was comprehensive, including the history of the Art Quilt Association of western Colorado, some books and periodicals and some of the many art materials and fabrics she uses in her creations. Polly Pulver showed the results of some of the exercises in creativity that were done in the early years of the association.
Pat gave several definitions of the art quilt, pointing out the important differences between art quilting and traditional quilting, showing some examples of quilts that look "arty" but were made using a commercial pattern so would not be considered an art quilt for a show of original work.
Pat integrated a trunk show of her work along with 8x10 inch samples of different techniques and materials she has experimented with. This diary of her work is a very good way for the audience to get close to the samples and see and feel the textures and techniques. Among the samples were pieces using burning, stamping, over painting, beading, glue as a medium, Tyvek molding, paper used as fabric, puff points, photography, and fabrics pointed and dyed by various methods, just to name a few.
Snapshot albums of works by AQuA artists that have been accepted for major exhibits, such and Bridges and Text were passed around. Pat gave a list of upcoming events where AQuA artists will be featured and showed her own Text entry as well as entries by Gwen Truby and Nancy Vanaken for the Bridges exhibition.
The program was entertaining and educational and very much appreciated by the Friendship members. Written by Polly Pulver. The steering committee thanks Pat for presenting for AQuA.

Denver 2008 Theme - Free Range Fibers:
We, as Art Quilters, do not handle being fenced in or force-fed rules. We are seduced by colors that clash, fibers that are not always natural and an art form that doesn't have to have borders or bindings. As Art Quilters, we often use unconventional materials which might poke our fingers or get our hands dirty.
Free range fibers have seduced us into believing that they are good for our creative souls. They speak to us of vast arrays of texture, color, odd fiber content and deconstructing rules.
We, at the Art Quilt Association, believe that, if our art form is left unfettered and free, our artistic spirits will be sustained and our creativity will grow.
We, at The Art Quilt Association, believe that, if our art form is left unfettered and free, our artistic spirits will be sustained and our creativity will grow.
Rules: No sides smaller than 24" and no sides larger than 50". All work must be ORIGINAL
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
An Art Quilt is
an original exploration of a concept or idea rather than the handing down of a “pattern. It experiments with textile manipulation, color, texture and/or a diversity of mixed media. An Art Quilt often pushes quilt world boundaries. An Art Quilt should consist predominately of fiber or a fiber-like material with one or multiple layers which are held together with stitches or piercing of the layers.
Guidelines
Our work should be original. Some examples of works that would not fit this definition are:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This morning I was talking to the lady that gave our room away at our last meeting. We are going to try to figure out why our meeting was on the computer calendar when she first called me about moving us but then apparently wasn't on the calendar later. Anyway, the lady, Dani, told me that a few women came to the meeting early and she told them that there was no meeting because it wasn't on the calendar. She said they were driving away when I drove up. Anyway, my apologies to anyone who was turned away and, if we get bumped, we will meet in the upstairs (child welfare) lobby.
Creative Embellishments
Embellishment Supply list—full day---from Sherrill Kahn
In this class you will learn many wonderful techniques to embellish any craft project that you wish to create. The techniques that we will cover in class are: Fabric and Cardstock Motifs, Air Dry Clay Elements, Wire Beads, Fabric and Paper beads, and Creative Embellishments using Tyvek. My new book “Creative Embellishments” shows all of these techniques. On my website you can also see necklaces and books that have been embellished with some of the techniques that you will learn in this class. My website is: http://www.impressmenow.com
FABRIC: 8” squares of high thread count cotton fabric---bring 3 or 4.
PAPER: Heavy white cardstock (I use 60# to 80# cardstock)---bring 2 or 3
PAINT: For all surfaces: 3 to 4 jars each of Jacquard’s Lumiere, Neopaque, Textile Paint, and Sherrill’s sorbets. You can use other paint for this class since it is not a fabric painting class. These are the paints that I use because of the color intensity and use on multi-surfaces.
Applicator tipped paint: at least one bottle
Jacquard’s Exciter packs: Jacquard makes a variety of applicator tipped paint in exciter packs. You can buy Sherrill’s Sorbets in an applicator pack if you can’t find the jars. You can fit a metal applicator tip on all of the paint in the Exciter Packs except Dye-na-flow. Be sure to buy an extra metal applicator tip to use on the bottles so that you can draw details and lines on your work.
SPONGES: Buy a sponge that never hardens. It can be found in paint and wallpaper departments in large home improvement stores. It is often dark yellow in color. Cut the sponge into squares 1” to 1 ½”. Cut the sponge before class with sharp scissors. Bring at least ten sponge squares.
MISCELLANEOUS:
Fabric glue
Paper glue---I use “The Ultimate”
Credit card or flat paint scraper to apply the glue
Pins---ball headed
Scissors---sharp fabric and paper
Air-dry clay---I use Hearty air-dry clay and I especially like their translucent clay.
Brush---½” flat
Wire---24 gauge---one roll or package of various colors in 24 gauge
Beads---seed
Optional: charms or other dangles
Knitting needle---metal---size 1, 2, 3, or 4---(Different sizes will give different results).
Yarn---small amounts of decorative yarn, ribbon, etc.
Tyvek---at least one 12” x 12” piece
Iron and ironing board
Teflon ironing sheets (two) Plastic to cover your work surface
Freezer paper cut into 12” squares (about 5 or 6) and rolled in the opposite direction of the curl—do this before class.
Water containers--one large (about the size of a large Cool Whip container)---make sure the container is large and flat.
Old work shirt
Notebook and pen
Paper towels--- bring about 20.
Hand brush or old toothbrush to clean the rubber stamps and your hands.
Optional: I use a battery-operated inexpensive toothbrush to clean rubber stamps, my hands, and use as a painting tool.
Rubber stamps---I will bring rubber stamps and rollagraphs to use in class
Camera to take photographs
You can share supplies with a friend, or buy them at reasonable prices from Dharma Trading company. Their website is: www.dharmatrading.com Their phone number is (800) 542-5227
Saturday July 7
Painting Pizzazz – Painting Techniques From A to Z
I have two books in print that showcase a variety of painting techniques. They are “Creative Stamping with Mixed Media Techniques” and “Creative Embellishments”. Both books can be ordered from our website: http://www.impressmenow.com When you are on the website, don’t forget to sign up for my newsletter!!!
FABRIC:
NOTEBOOK: If you plan to put your samples in a notebook, please bring a plain notebook about 8” x 10” with heavy paper for mounting. Also bring a glue stick to mount the fabric. This will be handy for reference later. Your wet samples can be mounted after they are dry and ironed, but you can write the important information in the notebook before you mount the sample. The other possibility is to bring heavy cardstock and plastic sheet protectors to mount your work and label and then put into a spiral binder.
PAINT: The paint listed below is only a suggestion. If you have other paint you like, bring it to class.
SPONGES: This is the most important tool I use. Buy a sponge that never hardens in the wallpaper or tile department of a large home improvement store like Home Depot. It is dark yellow. Cut the sponge into 1” and 1¼” squares. Do this before class. You can bring textured sponges such as sea sponges. They make wonderful patterns.
BRUSHES: Brushes are optional. Bring them if you like to do brush work.
ADDITIONAL SUPPLIES:
If you are coming with a friend, you can share the supplies. The paint that I recommended can be purchased at Dharma Trading company. They have a website or you can call for a catalog. Their website is: www.dharmatrading.com Their phone number is: (800) 542-5227
You can email me with questions at: Impressme@earthlink.net Also, if you wish to pre-order my first book (“Creating with Paint), it is out of print. It covers all of the techniques we will be doing in class. The cost is $25 plus $4 shipping if you wish to have it before class. Also our rubber stamps and art work are on our website: www.impressmenow.com We will be bringing stamps, but some of you might want to pre-order before class.
