the diversity of mixed media as an art form.

Bridges: The unveiling of the art quilts created for Bridges simply dazzled the March meeting. Those of us there quickly realized that we were seeing an improved body of work from the group as a whole, a wonderful visual feast. We saw several new ‘personal bests’. We heard how hard people worked on getting an idea out of their head and into fiber. We heard about false starts, new techniques invented, and perseverance many times over. We heard about inspiration and how much thought went into each piece. Congratulations to everyone.

Quilter’s Newsletter Article: Many months ago Marla Ferguson wrote an article about AQuA for submission to Quilter’s Newsletter. They plan to print it this fall!!! We sent them lots of beautiful pictures and a CD full of all the pieces which received juror mentions for FOPS, TXT, and the Creamery show. I wish all our quilts could be in there, but I think only a few will get rich and famous due to publication. Thank you, Marla!

Thank You’s to our Members: Recently several members have stepped up to the plate to help AQuA. Bonny Stonemark, Caroline Bruggeman, and Ann Tregilgas offered their homes as B&B’s (we need a couple more in case timing is bad for these two). Tana LaDuke will be making us place card style name plates for our meeting to help those of us who are forgetful with all with names, in a large font for those of us who are also going blind. Kathleen Bryan will be finding events calendars on the web and entering Bridges and Stories information so that people can find our events, another opportunity to become rich and or famous. Gwen Trubey will track down addresses for all the quilt museums. We will put them on our postcard mailing list (kept beautifully up to date by the talented Bonny Stonemark) with hopes that one of our beautiful postcards will make them call us and beg us to send them our exhibits, think: rich and or famous. Cathy Stewart and Jolene Stratton are working on workshops. We have already had volunteers to help with the Art Center show in 2008, Kathleen Bryan, Sandra Lee and Lezlie Sage. Madeline Brown offered to help with computer things. And the multi talented, camo attired Deb Snider is looking into what it would cost to make a catalog of our shows, oh, we will all be rich and or famous! I am undoubtedly forgetting people. Please forgive me. I have not listed the steers, trust me, we work like (cow) dogs for AQuA!!! Figure out how YOU can do something to help. Call a steer and offer your skills. You will be surprised how fun and satisfying it is to be a part of our successes. LOOK what we have done!
======================================================================================================
Art Space and Open Studios: If you are serious about selling your art you should investigate Art Space and Open Studios. Kathy Pfeuffer first brought this group to the attention of the steers. Marge Fox has attended two of their workshops (Writing Press Releases and Approaching Galleries) and highly recommends their inexpensive workshops. Find out more from Linda Brotman-Evans, 256-7405, or at brotman2@earthlink.net

Demos: Since our March meeting ran so long, the two scheduled demos will be done in April, i.e., Christie Barton will demo fabric beads and Emily Buchanan will show us foil beads. Also, Cathy Stewart will show us how to make fabric postcards for our upcoming show in Hotchkiss. Don’t miss this meeting!!
=======================================================================================================
Please bring your show and tell, techniques you have tried, books that you have run onto, classes or events you have heard about. All of this information keeps the creative flow going. Do your part!
=======================================================================================================
Design Boot Camp: Drill Sergeant Deborah Snider brought “Balance” to us at the March meeting (the handout is included in this newsletter for those of you who couldn’t make the meeting). Next up is “Contrast” for April. Deborah always makes these mini-lectures lots of fun. Thank you, Deborah.

The Daily Sentinel Postcard Contest: Did you read Sherida Warner’s column in the Daily Sentinel on Sunday April 1st? Not only did she plug our upcoming postcard show at the Creamery, she also announced that The Sentinel editors have agreed to sponsor a fabric postcard contest for the readers. The rules are very simple:
I think Sherida is doing a great job with her quilting column. Why don’t you send her an e-mail and tell her so:

Have you seen the $100,000 Quilting Challenge magazine? Did you see Bella, the 2006 grand prizewinner, on NBC's Today Show in January? Did you know that the ten winners each issue receive prize packages worth more than $2500? Have you considered entering? You should!
The purpose of the $100,000 Quilting Challenge magazine is twofold: to find the next great quilting superstar, and to provide techniques and inspiration for all quilters. Each issue of this quarterly magazine features ten winning quilts—made by quilters just like you—selected by NQA certified judges. We showcase these winners and the story behind their prizewinning quilts, creating a gallery in a magazine format.
We also offer articles from well-known quilting experts who share their techniques and photos of their favorite work. One exciting addition to the magazine this year is the special "Quilt Studio" section. Each expert featured in the magazine also shares a mini lesson or technique that readers can try themselves, making this inspiration and informative magazine a little more hands on.
Join in the excitement of the Challenge by entering a quilt today. The deadline for photo entries for Issue #3 is April 6, 2007, and the deadline for Issue #4 is June 22, 2007. Remember, you can't win if you don't enter! The entry form and complete rules are available on our website, www.quiltingchallenge.com.
Please contact me with any questions.
Thank you!

WEB SITE: www.theartquiltassociation.com There are still those of you who have promised Marge Fox their web page info. Please work on it. Look at your fellow member’s pages and figure out what you want to show and say. Marge can list prices if things are for sale. Your inclusion of a picture or artist statement is completely voluntary. Pictures need to be high quality. Marge can also to link to other places where your work appears. E-mail your pictures and other info to her at foxhaven@bresnan.net. Please don’t make your page and send it to her---just send it in pieces attached to an e-mail; then send a check to Susan Strickland for $20. Contact Marge at 241-5523 if you have more questions.

Kudos to our members: Kathy Pfeufer was juried into the "Recollections" art show (not a quilt show!) March 1, 2007, held at the Two Rivers Winery sponsored by the Art Space & Open Studios. There were size limitations on all entries, and if your art was larger than 24" X 24" you were limited to one piece. Kathy showed the quilt "Fingerprint".
One of the attendees was Pamela Blithe, an architect/interior designer Kathy had met several years back while building a new home in GJ. Later during the show Ms. Blithe contacted Kathy about doing some other quilted "Fingerprints" for the "CBI" building later in 2007 as part of the decor for the building. It took Kathy a moment to understand Ms. Blithe was talking about the "Colorado Bureau of Investigation", soon to be moving into a new Building in Grand Junction! Fingerprints on a bureau of investigation building are really too perfect!
While it is only a verbal understanding at the moment, further e-mail discussions (with professional pictures attached) have arranged for final plans, color choices, & contracts to be continued closer to when the building is completed later this year!

AQuA Bank Balance as of 4/1/07: $2,745.36.
=======================================================================================================
Balance
Definition: The distribution of the weight (actual or visual) of the elements of a composition. (This information is taken from Foundations of Art and Design by Lois Fichner-Rathus, ISBN 0-534-61338-1)
All-Over Pattern: A composition in which each part has equal visual weight.
Approximate Symmetry: The arrangement of similarities on either side of a dividing line or plane are inexact, thus providing added interest to a work.
Asymmetrical: More than slight differences between the divided areas of a work, yet there is an overall sense of balance.
Balance using Line, Shape, Color, Value, Texture: Artists may distribute the elements of art equally throughout their composition, providing a sense of line balance, etc.
Diagonal Balance: The elements on either side of a diagonally divided pictorial space seem to be about equal in weight, number or emphasis.
Golden Mean: The Classical Greek ideal standard for proportion and balance. A small part relates to a larger part as the larger part relates to the whole.
Horizontal Balance: The elements in the left and right sides of the work are balanced.
Imbalance: There is a certain comfort level in balance, but not all art is about comfort; not all art aims to be aesthetically pleasing. Some artists aim to shock the viewer, or to play into a viewer’s discomfort with imbalance or uncertainty.
Radial Balance: The design elements radiate from a center point.
Symmetrical: The elements are balanced by similarity of form or arrangement on either side of a dividing line or plane.
Vertical Balance: The elements above and below the horizontal line are balanced.
