Rhythm

You know what rhythm is in music; its repetitions can energize you to want to dance or lull you into a meditative or sleepy state. It is an often predictable pattern.

Peaceful: Often, horizontal elements and cool colors create a feeling of mellowness, relaxation, or peace. Curvilinear lines are frequently peaceful.

Agitated: Often, vertical or diagonal elements and warm colors create a feeling of excitement, energy, and activity. Angular lines frequently feel agitated.

Regular: A predictable, regular pattern is one that uses the same elements across the entire artwork.

Alternating: Different elements repeat themselves in a predictable order. You might alternate a thick red line with yellow circles, for instance.

Progressive: Variations of line, shape, color, or texture that cause a graduate transition, an expectation of change.
