Exhibition Dates: August 20 through September 7, 2007
Exhibition Reception Date: Friday, August 24 from 7:00-9:00 p.m.
Gallery Hours: Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.
Gallery Talk: Date/Time to Be Announced (we traditionally have the gallery talk immediately before the reception)
Theme: The Art Quilt Association is proud to join with Mesa State College of Grand Junction in “Stories of Our Ancestors.” This event is a year-long multicultural celebration of our human family and will celebrate and combine fine art and traditional cultural and ethnic histories by acknowledging the similarities in our human family. Fiber art is a universal language and provides means for the discovery and revelation of the endless and unique similarities of the human condition. The fiber artists have designed art quilts that celebrate all aspects of racial, ethnic or cultural heritage.
Kick-Off Event: The kick-off event at Mesa State College for the 2007-2008 academic year is a juried exhibition in the Johnson Gallery, Campbell College Center, by The Art Quilt Association (AQuA) of Grand Junction. During the “Stories of Our Ancestors” implementation year 2007-2008, the campus and community will enjoy a master calendar of performances, readings, workshops, seminars, exhibitions, festivals and other events that honor diverse aspects of our human family on the Western Slope of Colorado.
Entry: All pieces must be the original work of AQuA members. There is no limit on the number of pieces that each artist may submit for jurying. Artists pay $15 entry fee for the first piece and $10 for each additional entry (non-refundable).
Commission: All of the pieces may be for sale, but Mesa State will take a 30% commission on any sales, so price your pieces accordingly.
Size: Pieces may not be larger than 72” x 72”(six feet). There is no minimum size requirement, however, it still must have a sleeve, label and slat. Sleeve may cover entire back of quilt (see mini quilt diagram).
Wall Pieces: Will hang by slats nailed to the wall at each end. Velcro will not be used for hanging quilts.
Sleeves: All wall quilts must have a minimum 4” sleeve on top. The bottom sleeve is optional. Sleeves must be minimum 1” shorter on each end than width of quilt (see diagram.)
Labels: All pieces must have a cloth label on the back of the quilt, lower left corner (as you look at the back) above the sleeve (see diagram). This label must include name, address and phone number of artist along with name of the quilt. Other information may be included if desired. The artist’s name must have a temporary cover with tape or muslin for jurying purposes.
Slats: All wall quilts submitted must include a slat with holes drilled approximately ¼” to ½” near each end (see diagram). Please write your name and the title of your quilt on each slat. No dowels will be accepted.
Sculptural Pieces: The gallery can accommodate lightweight hanging pieces or pedestal-mounted sculptural quilts. Pedestals are supplied by the gallery.
Photography: Professional photography will again be required for accepted work. The photographer chosen for this exhibit will charge the following: $20.00 for the first quilt which will include a full shot, one close up and a CD; $15.00 for each additional quilt for an individual artist. You may also arrange for your own professional photographer. If you chose a different photographer, a two-color digital image (full & close-up) must be submitted on a CD-ROM. Digital images must be 300 dpi minimum, at least 4 x 6 and saved in jpeg format. If your quilt is not juried into the show, your photography fee will be returned to you, unless you still wish to have your piece to be photographed.
Jurying: Entries will be juried as soon as possible after the June 16th AQuA meeting. The comments and critiques by the juror will not be forthcoming until the pieces NOT selected are notified by mail along with the return of their piece. The juror will be asked to select from three to five pieces which he/she feels would be eye catching for our postcard. The Steering Committee will make the final decision on which piece will be on the postcard.
Juror: Maureen Hendricks.
If this Exhibition Travels Following the MSC Show: All shipped pieces must coexist in the same shipping container. Your piece can include frames or stretcher bars, etc, but that may mean that it does not travel with the rest of the show should we later get an opportunity. The pieces must be able to be folded without being damaged or ruined. Surface designs/embellishments must be securely fastened so that they don’t rub off. AQuA purchases the shipping container and the Steering Committee reserves the right to decide if your piece will or will not play nice in the box with other pieces. Additional costs incurred for shipping will be covered by the artist whose piece needs special handling.
Due Date: All entries are due to Deborah Snider at the AQuA meeting on Saturday, June 16th. There will be no exceptions to this rule. At the meeting, the following must be turned in:
Publicity: The Art Department/Johnson Gallery covers the cost of postcards (up to 1,100; with a regular mailing list of 700) and the food for the reception. The Art Department will send out press releases with selected photographs.
